Ela means leaves, and Kizhi means bolus (Potli) and is also known as Patra Pinda Sweda or leaf-bag-massage. In this process, the leaves, lemon, coconut, etc. are chopped into pieces and fried with rock and suitable medicated oils and tied with a linen cloth that helps from the bundle. This therapy is use to rejuvenate, relax, and nourish the affected area and the body. This massage with medicinal leaves provides relief from stiffness and joint pain, improves blood circulation, increases perspiration and gives optimum relaxation, and also flushes out toxins from the body. This potli dipped into warm Ayurvedic oils, will be used for massaging the body. The bolus should be gently applied all over the body in a systematic way. This bolus is applied hot to the skin already smeared with warm medicated oils. We have to maintain its temperature the bolus should be intermittently kept warm by heating on the frying pan.
The leaves that are received cut up and mixed with grated coconut with a pinch of lemon and honey and fried with medicated oil and rock salt in a frying pan by giving proper heat. The oil is prepared according to the kind of therapy the patient wants. The leaves are separated into 4 parts and packed in a potli in the from of bundles.
